I have seen lots of free and paid web directories on the net... I always wondered as a user what they want from a web directory - in terms of features/ revenues etc and what does the owner of directory expect in return

Also, which are best opensource directory scripts running around the corner?

web directories help build links for seo, it makes money
u can go for phplinkdirectory.com its free. as much as u invest you get back out of it, works that way.

Yes, they build links, and are also a useful vehicle for advertising. Then there is the income from the paid listings.

Visitor add their website on the diectory to get back link/target customer who click through directory.

Owner got money from advertising and member sign up to put their site.

it easy like that.

Personally have always used them much more for SEO purposes than actual direct business generation.... the majority of contacts I have received from them tend to be marketing companies etc offering me advertising space/ sponsorship opportunities rather than actual potential customers.
