Of course, from a phone interview you can get a completely unbiased opinion on somebody. Although it is illegal to judge people do to race and sexual preference it is impossible to deny that things like that don't occur. Over the phone you have the ability to determines somebodys communication skills as well as recieve their history without ever seeing them. A face to face interview I believe is an absolute must before hiring somebody so I would agree that it should only be used at the preliminary level.

I agree with the above posters. It's a good way of accessing a particular style of communication skills and it also prevents distractions by elements such as appearance. However I believe it's important to gauge how some one presents themselves, as there's more to matching a person to a job than just the skills they put on their CV

We do teleseminars and we don't have a problem with our guests so far. It's just the distance and the person's availability, and it's easy that we do it by phone.

Absolutely, you can get a lot about a person's communication style over the phone, but I wouldn't skip the face to face. You want to be sure you are hiring the person you spoke to over the phone.

Well, the phone interview is the first contact a HR personnel (like myself) do to get a feel for a particular candidate. We want to see how comfortable they are able to communicate, how nervous they are, how excited they are about getting a phone call about the possibility of a job, etc.
Depending on what type of job I am posting, my organization can get roughly about 20 to over a 100 applications. If we like a candidate, we then proceed to setup a face to face interview. In the HR department, myself and two other HR consultants do the interviewing. Usually, all three of us will interview a particular candidate to get a grasp of that person. |

Is it really possible to judge them through phone? Well, for me it depends... Primary qualifications and attitude could be determined but skills would be hard to determine just through phone especially given circumstances that certain accents and thoughts would not match. Well that's what I think... How bout the others? I mean would telephonic interview be enough?
