I've always viewed a degree in a job advertisement as a 'filtering exercise'. I've recruited in the past and have always mainly preferred good old experience rather than a piece of paper. Although its probably also down to the type of role you're recruiting for. For example, if you want a programmer - experience - if you want a Business Analyst - then you may be more swayed to consider people with a degree

When it comes to Big organisations, it would be mandatory for the HR Managers to seek for candidates who has a good degree first. For example, if you take a CMM- level 4 company, there are certain standards which the company has to follow for sure. So that piece of paper will have a lot of value. Having said that as a person gets more and more experience, companies would only look for people who has more degree and experience in order to promote a person to a higher position.
When it comes to a small company, they tend to look at experience rather than their degree. These companies would be happy to take experienced person as the cost involved would be less (salaries) rather than speding more for the same job to a person who has more degrees. |

I would always suggest you go for the degree as well as the experience part. Degree because that confirms that the person is concious about his/her career and experience so that the job is done smoothly. In case a person is extraordinarily talented, then you can give an exception...

Having an educational degree certificate should always be considered as the most important criteria to seek a job succesfully. Suppose one person has done his 12th standard with some experience and the other has a degree and who is a fresher,in that case the fresher will land up getting a more starting salary package compared to the first one or his starting salary will be the same as the first one . This is the rule of the game.

I wonder how the learned forum looks at a degree just as a piece of paper !!!!
Its the story of the past when most successful businessmen did not even know how to sign their names. I ask this forum one question : Name me one such businessman who has put his child in a similar situation ??? Answer is a big NO - instead they sent them to American Universities for higher studies . Reason: So that his predecessor can lend his professional expertise to the business !!! If a degree is still considered a piece of paper , well I can only be appalled and hide my face in shame. ![]()

You won't be high qualified employer with out education, that's for sure . To improve your stuff only by your "rich" experience you probably have to "jump" above your head.
I'm definitely agree with Jenny ( I wonder how the learned forum looks at a degree just as a piece of paper !!!! ) It can not be just a piece of paper. It can be just a huge theoretical basis that you've create to realised all your professional abilities. Usually , one should start with education first and than to improve your self in practical level. I would never recruit a person with out educational degree. ( that's all regarding level of administration , of’ course) .Although , someone with a very good experience could be almost retire age . ![]()
