Hi,
I think the most important step to establishing a proper link campaign is the following: 1. Research you target market 2. Research your competition 3. Find the keywords you are going for 4. Brainstorm, try to write down as many article titles as possible that your target market would want to read (keep in mind your keywords & competitors) 5. Then outline & write all the articles 6. Optimize each article for your keywords, include internal links 7. Then gather all resources possible for getting these articles published (article directories, search engines, news websites, other sites listed above). 8. Then create a plan to list these articles in all of these places. If you don't plan out your linking campaign it will not be successful. It is so hard to get off track, if you don't have a clear plan your life will be extremely difficult. *** A great way to get FREE content targeted links is to MANUALLY submit articles to 'article directories'. The links will not be on high PR sites, but they will be links and is a great way to obtain 3-4 keyword phrases that don't have much competition. There are many companies (like us) that can do this for you. Although it is very time consuming finding article directories and MANUALLY submitting them to article directories is a great way to start. Jeff Foster http://www.WebBizIdeas.com

I completely agree about the manually submitting to article directories. You get more of a feel for how well its going. I've seen a lot of these automatic sites and know for a fact that some of the article directories they list will never publish your article - or if they do it will be minus the links.
The thing that annoys me a little is how many directories there are out there either abandoned or just kept ticking over for advertising revenue.

If you are starting out, I would recommend manual submission.
But once your site (or sites) start growing, website submission and link building is something that could be outsourced so you can concentrate on site content etc.

Outsourcing directory submission is a great way to go, especially if the individual has good rep. Forum signatures, article submissions, and sitewide links are great ways to build traffic. Paying for inclusion in good directories provides relevant one way backlinks and helps build PR. Here is the directory list I use:

I would suggest to go for a SEO service from some reputed provider, if you are senious in bringing your site in first page of top search engines like google, yahoo etc.

Those kind of companies does not offer a guarantee that you'll get in the top 10 of search engines. I still think that doing SEO for your sites is better.
