How to advertise a website within a region?

I have created a website for selling used things. I want to make this site known to people local to my area. How do I do this for free?

I also want to advertise this site for free nationally. How do I do this?

press release of your website on internet top pr release websites
check out local classifieds websites.
submit your website in local web directories.
find local blogs submit your website to those.
link exchange with related websites.

yes askin the local press to write a review for ur site proves very helpfull... secondly try to make it popular among the local teenagers like college students etc.. like word of mouth stuff, etc.... also post about ur site in local networkin sites like orkut and stuff...

surely at times local newspapers also support with small description about new shop or service being opened in the local area , may be no cost as well for it.

oh yea networking sites are cool too..
also you can post in businessforum offers & request section after making 10 posts.

The best way to promote a website within a region is probably with geo-targeted pay per click ads. Both Google AdWords, and Yahoo! Search Marketing allow you to buy web advertising that is only displayed to people who are located within a certain region. Whereas the technology used to narrow the region down is not perfect, it works much of the time and is ideally suited for advertising websites that only pertain to a certain geographic region.

Post in Forums, swap links, basically evertyhing mentioned above.

But you've got to remember it is neer going to be free. At a minimum it is going to cost you time.

The best way to advertise a website for free is SEO (Search Engine Optimization) This is a huge task though. It includes link building, proper use of keywords, making a lot of useful content and making sure that your site has no broken links.

These days, if you have a website, SEO should be a large part of your marketing campaign. You need to make it so Google doesn't only rank you at number 1 for searching your business name, but that it ranks you number 1 for terms related to the area of business you are in.

all this are right, if you want to advertise in your country then you have to select web directories which are specially for that country only and pick that country domain name and advertise in those sites and forums for the response.
