Yes they are very helpful, but in my honest opinion I think blog about your business has way more potential than a single article. Just remember though if your article or blog get bury under million of other blog, then it's still like you trying to promote two sites at the same time... meaning you are trying to promote your article + your real business website.

That's why it's best to submit your article to a well known article directory where readers can read about it. Same thing goes with blog. Don't forget Digg.com or Reddit.com. Nowpublic.com is also very helpful. My own website also has a directory where you can submit your blog for free. It's rank 4 or so in google ranking.
