Paras, if you will observe the promotions very closely, you will notice that the free gift tags are attached mainly to slow moving items on the shelf so that they are able to get rid of them .
New product promotion usually is associated with price promotion - the best place to visit is home entertainment electronics, home appliances and white goods showrooms where u can see more of this strategic pricing - For example, a chopper free with a juicer and blender . Gift is always a bonus for any customer and a very tempting proposition.

Promotional items such as keyrings or tshirts can be good for your business, as well as givinf you free advertising

Depends on what it is that you are giving. If the overall return of giving a gift is enough then yea, free gifts are a great way to boost sales, perk up a client relationship or empty the shelves of slow moving stock. Everyone loves presents!
