It can be effective but I think advertising through SMS is really expensive. You need to analyze the cost - benefit of advertising through SMS before spending money in it.

SMS advertising can meet a receptive audience. But you need to make sure you don't spam them.

sms is very powerful in the way that it reaches most, it takes time for a person to read email on a TV to watch ads, go out see something
but mobile is always in hand, a vibration and you wanna just see what message it is, thanks to huge network security there is less amount of spamming with mobile networks, so it remains a very good option for promoting a product brand or service..

It can be cheap if you're doing them via an online gateway. Many places offer a cheaper service for the more SMS messages you send.

It is worth looking into depending on 'who' you're sending them to.

Sending them to random people wont work... HOWEVER.

If you get your members and vistors to sign up for perhaps a 'promotions & offers' section they can receive discounts, etc via SMS.

We have done this with some websites we've designed and it seems to be working well. Especially for restaurants, hair dressers, etc. If they're having a quiet week, they send out some SMS messages offering maybe a 10% discount to entice people to come in.

As we have a bulk sms website (mypc2sms.com) it has made this easier to do obviously.

Advertising via SMS is a good thing -- no spam filters! Haha!

SMS should really only be used as a relationship building tool with a current database. Mass sending to unknowns can annoy your market and turn them off your offer for ever.

If you have clients who book appointments, or as general reminders SMS is perfect for maintaining a healthy customer relationship as its very convenient for the customer to get those types of messages.

For retailers, Bluetooth technology also allows you to attract passers by with offers and is less invasive than general mass blasts which really are the lazy marketers way of marketing.

As always, you should understand the way your customer thinks and what they want from your type of business before using any marketing tool like SMS.

cheers

Everything has it's pro and cons.

I also think that as technology progresses and phones become more and more like PCs, TVs become more and more like PCs and PCs become more and more like phones, texting, emailing, messaging etc. can all be used to make contacts, promote your business and sell your services.

"The Future's Bright" as they'd say.
