Ultimately the only definitive roles is to give direction & organise, all the rest depends on both their role and the structure - a project manager dealing with matrix management and many staff requires a different skill set to a analysis manager with no direct reports and different again to an operations director.

I think the biggest role of a Manager is Leadership by Example and to accept ideas from the staff

I would partially agree that a manager would set an example for the team, only if he/she is "Approachable", "Understanding" & with 100% "Positive Attitude"

When all these qualities mix together then the below points come in place...
