Default To have a career or to have a business

I am a software engineer. I have been involved in this field for almost 20 years. I have been told that my field is supposed to be one of the top paying fields. In fact, it has been one of the top paying fields for quite a while. It did experience a down-turn around 2001-2003, but it looks like the field is in great demand lately. I am always getting phone calls for jobs.

But, this field can also be very stressful. I have been through a lot of downsizing. I don't like the stress. For all of the work and sacrifice I put into building my career, I have come to realize that I don't think it has been worth it.

Because of all of the downsizings, I don't feel that I have any control over my life or my career. People have said that maybe I should work for myself; become a consultant or contractor, but even then you are always under the gun.

Jobs are not reliable anymore. Unfortunately, many of us are not taught to be business owners. We are taught to be employees. We are told as children up through young adulthood, that if you get good grades and go to college, we can find a good job. But, do we really want that kind of lifestyle? One where we are under the control of others who at anytime can tell us they don't want us anymore.

If I had children, I think I would train them to be entrepreneurs. I think getting good grades and going to college are important, if just for the experience. But, I would tell my children that it is very important to have something other than just a job; to not depend on jobs to bring them the lifestyle they want. Those days are pretty much gone. Get the grades, go to college, and find a job, and maybe on the side, learn how to invest in the stock market. Learn how to invest in real estate. Start a business and learn how to manage the business. Learn about earning a residual income. Once these skills are mastered, if they want, they can move from having a boss to being the boss.

Lawren-
Yes, everything you said is great advice. I, like you, work in IT as a Systems Administrator, and I feel like I have done this 5 years too long. I am looking very forward to finishing my MBA next May and beginning my new future in the wonderful world of business. The great thing is that if any venture proves fruitless, then I can always fall back on IT management.

Good luck!

Hi Lawren,

Great advice. I agree with you.

Jobs are no longer like they are used to. Even in traditional Japanese firms, there are no longer such a thing as life time employment or the seniority career path. Globalization has made it so competitive nowadays that, no matter how experienced you are, or how many years you have served, you jobs may be transferred or taken over by someone in another country who can probably do it faster or cheaper.

I believe the merits of a business is in creating and building of something that you can call your own. Being your own bosses does means you will have to shoulder a lots of responsibiity that you do not have if you are working for someone. But I think the rewards are much more exciting and not to mention the freedom to make decisions and take calculated risk your way. If you are someone who loves to take the leads, take the risk and start something, building a business or working on your own as freelancer or consultants is a great way to make a living.

it is very busy to deal with business with your self, and if you have a career you only have to deal the work that you are responsible.

Lightbulb Re: To have a career or to have a business

Dear Lawren,

I'm William Tan from Singapore. Me and my team are in the Health & Wellness business which founded in the 1992.

We travel the world as a part of a successful international business. Now operating in 14 markets, we offers the opportunity to build a successful business, see exotic locations, and discover exciting cultures as you work a business that is truly global.

I truly understand the kind of stress level you are going through. And you must have woken up after seeing people have been down-size, retrenched.
It's true and it's the fact, companies cannot just sell away their machines, equipment, or even down-size their factories. Cutting people's head is the most effective and cost saving for the company to survive through recession.

As you can see, there is no such thing as "Iron rice bowl" or "Job Securities" now. Have you ever thought of, when you are in your 40s or 50s. What will happen to you if you are the one being down-size? Will your savings last you and your family and how long can it last?

And I agree with you, we are not taught to be business owners. Schools only teaches us how to get good grades then get a good job.. (Is it very familiar to you, well it is the reality). Sadly to say, many people as employees have lack of financial education...the network is very low as an employee, he/she basically exchange this precious resource called "Time" for money.

Some of this group of employees decided to come out to start their own businesses aka self-employed. They spend large capital just to start a small store, stall, company of their own, employ staff, etc...etc...etc. It is true that they can earn better income than an employee, but they have lesser time for themselves with their families too. When they have business they work long hours, when they do not have business, they work longer hours to get more business. Basically, they are chained to their work and have no time freedom.

I also want to share some brief information about big business. They get income with or without work, this called leverage or residual income. The earning power is very huge because they have a system. For example Bill Gates walks away from Microsoft for a long holiday, he still get his earnings without his present in the company. Imagine MacDonalds, their system works so well even thou they hire students just to prepare the burgers and fries. And is this familiar to you? "Sir, do you want to upsize?" Customers just spend a little money to upsize their meals generates millions of profits for MacDonalds every year. That's what I called, the "System"

And it is the reality now and the future, the rich are getting richer. The poor will get poorer. The value of money is becoming smaller due to inflation. And because the rich have financial knowledge, they use money to create passive income for them. They buy assets, invest into stocks, do wealth protection and the poor will simply put their hard earn money into banks without knowing their value of money becomes smaller over time. Warren Buffet is a very good example, he use money to make money.

The above statements are general information which I learned from my mentor and successful business leaders.

I'm glad that you will give your children financial education and to have a career or to have a business. It's really up for your decision and your dreams who want to achieve.

I wish you good health and all the best for your future endeavors.

Great Advice!!!

But i think you choose a job in which you are comfortable and interested. Paycheck should given secondary priority. If you enjoy work, money will flow automatically and you will never be stressed or broken.

hello,
there is the situation of secured future in choosing the job career or business. as job guarentees full life income whereas business involves risk. Before choosing carer in these two fields we need to think that is our finincial condition of our home quiet well that we go for risk or make just a secure life with a job. choosing careeers involves expectetions in future more than interest to the family having low income.
