Default The School of Hard Knocks

Hi all,

Here's what I'm keen to get some viewpoints on;

Some of us in business have studied, others have not. What have been your personal experiences and what role, in your opinion, should education ideally play in business. For example, should a recent graduate seek further study, or experience, should courses be more hands on, are internships the way to go before or after study and so on. What are your experiences?

i would say its very essential for someone to study as much as possible from my experience, its not just something written in books, but the kind of group and circle you get in real life cant be done online or in some other way.

its for 2 reasons, one is knowledge and other is friends sharing knowledge.

The world moves so quick these days and the schools just can't keep up.

I've done both..and school of hard knocks was way way more instructive in the educational process.

Personally I'm a fan of courses that have more practical than theoretical elements to them, they give a supported environment but still plenty of practical experience, which is why I like the idea of mentoring and internships.

I agree with fastcart. The school of Hard Knocks is so much more valuable. The education system is so far behind that it's pretty ridiculous and people somehow just don't see it or don't want to see it. People are encouraged to drop tens of thousands of dollors for a degree that will get you some job that you will be dying to get out of within a year. I speak from experience. I went to one of the best schools and got really good grades. I don't say you shouldn't go. College is an experience and I don't regret if for a second just be careful that they don't "educate" you too much.

I think it's different for everyone. But in my course, experience is a must. It's beyond books. It's more of the actual practice. Common sense helps a lot, I must say.

I like to use this analogy. the success of your business life is determined by your intelligence and ability to apply this knowledge, imagine your intelligence is a cup. hands on experience determines the size of you cup, book smarts/university fill your cup. so both are essential, if your cup is half empty you are not using your brain to the best of your ability, and if you read to many books the cup overflows and is knowledge is wasted.

My personal opinion is, education is the foundation of a career. You should learn the theories of your field and gain the recognition. This adds to your business credibility. Through study you gain textbook knowledge of your business path while also gaining contacts.

After learning your trade you can put your gained knowledge into practice, constantly building on your skills with experience.

It's fair to say that "Times Change, so colleges and universities can't keep up" and "It's only a piece of paper!", but if you're serious about your career path you will need to do as much learning as you can.
