The olive market is growing as more and more people start to use olive oil and table olives; currently we aren't producing enough olives for our local South African market:
-------------------------------------------------------------------- The Olive Game: SA vs. Rest of the World Table 1: Estimated World Olive Production and Consumption of SA cf. World. Ha: total planted 2200 ha [SA] - 2m ha [WORLD] Ha: bearing 1500 ha [SA] - 10 ha [WORLD] No. of trees Tot. 850 000 [SA] - 3 000 m [WORLD] No. of trees bearing 450 000 [SA] - 2 500 m [WORLD] PRODUCTION: Total: 3 500-4 500 tons [SA] - 13m tons [WORLD] T able (fruit): 2 000 – 2 200 tons [SA] - 1,2m tons [WORLD] Oil olives: 1 500- 2 000 tons [SA] - 11 m tons [WORLD] Olive oil: 220 - 250 tons [SA] - 2m - 2,6m tons [WORLD] CONSUMPTION Table olives: (product) 4000 tons [SA] - 1.2 m tons [WORLD] Olive oil: 800 tons [SA] - 2,4m tars [WORLD] IMPORTS: Table olives (product) (10- 15%) = 400 tons Olive oil (60 - 70%) = 550 tons -------------------------------------------------------------------- Thus we are importing instead of producing olives. Looking at the above statistic, it is clear the South African market is ready for more olive producers. Olives usually grows in the Western Cape, but it was recently discovered to grow lushly in the area between Bela Bela (Warmbath) and Modimolle (Nylstroom). Here is a very good investment opportunity with healthy returns; a small olive tree takes 5 years to bear olives making it a 5 year investment.
