The Indian government has declared 14 river projects including those involving the Teesta river as national assets to harness drinking water, irrigation and hydropower potential.
Six of the projects, proposed by the Water Resources Ministry, had been approved by the Indian cabinet at its meeting in New Delhi on Thursday. The projects are of strategic significance and have international ramifications, Water Resource Minister Saifuddin Soz told the reporters after the meeting. The six projects will be implemented on Teesta river in West Bengal, Ravi river in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir. Most of the projects chosen for implementation have international ramifications. Of the 14 projects, the ones to be implemented on international rivers in north east India include Noa-Dehang in Arunachal Pradesh, the Kulsi dam on the Siang in Assasm and the upper Sijang on the Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh. Soz termed the cabinet decision as 'landmark development'. The projects were recommended by a group of ministers headed by Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar. Ninety per cent of the funding for the projects would come from the federal government while the rest would be provided by the governments of the states concerned, Soz added. |
