What Katy has said is right. if planing to join an mlm, one should do some good research about that company. In affiliate marketing, [mostly] atleast one doesn't need to pay any up-front fee as in mlm. As Hamish pointed out, in mlm, even with all those meetings... the actual promotion is on one2one basis, that too.. to our friends and relatives... and in the end, in most cases end up with strained relationships.
With a professional attitude, sincere effort and support of a good company, mlm still is not a bad deal.

As far as my knowledge all MLM companies are good & have their own ethics, and started the company to do the business. My experience says that only we(networkers) don't use the proper system devised by the company & mislead everybody by telling there is quick money in the business to get ppl sponsored fast thus cheating is done. Such cheating is not done by the MLM company but by the Network Marketers(we), Due to which most of us have lost faith from MLM company.

You're absolutely right my friend, there are so many fake and fraudulent schemes all over around that they make MLM looks pretty bad.

this is an interesting question. I've worked for years in MLM or networking, both in the field and corporate. the same questions came when franchising started...by now networking is real, lots of big firms use it, BUT these days, even myself, find it out of date... it works, but its old hat. there are new ways that developed from dinosaur MLM, there is an interesting book called Realm of Wealth, that is about self growth, but does touch on this, I think you will see some interesting new changes that the dinosaurs are not aware of yet

You know for sure that it's a legitimate business when you can get tax write-offs that you would get in a regular business. That is one of the attractions of Network Marketing for many people.

I joined up with a network marketing phone company called ACN. They are getting bigger and bigger. However it can be quite time consuming, and i think you need to know a lot of people for it to work. Being a student it was hard to find people with the time or money to do it. But from what i saw i think if you put in the effort the results could be quite good. Good luck to all those who do it!
