Hi
Marketing is really a process that comes down to planning; like the post above says. However, if you don't know what your goals are, why you are in business (it has to be more than just about making money) and what the business stands for then any marketing message will just be a garbled plea for leads that won't impress your customers. That's Step 1. In Step 2 you need to understand your customers better than they understand themselves. This is a lot more than just knowing how old they are, what sex, where they live etc. You have to know what motivates them, what they like and dislike, what their goals are, their problems etc. You don't understand your customers by guessing or presuming what they really want, you have to actually ask them. The lazy marketer would just run out at this point, (based on a hunch) spend a stack of money on some ads and hope for the best because he/she feels that understanding their customer is either too hard or takes too much time. It doesn't. In fact, you can get to know your customers and prospects a lot better by any number of techniques such as; focus groups, surveys, competitions, on your website, visiting forums like this one, having your own forum, training your staff to ask the right questions etc. You don't ever stop this process. It has to be built into your business. Finally, Step 3, you're armed with this knowledge about your customer you can innovate and provide the type of products and services they really want. How much better would your business be over the competition if you were actually giving customers tailor made solutions to their problem and better experiences all because you took the time to get to know them better? You'd kill your competition dead in an instant! This last stage may or may not include advertising. It all depends on what your customer wants afterall and if they find that e-mail campaign a pain in the neck, you should avoid it like the plague even if the sales rep from the e-mail service provider or list provider tells you how good a quality list it is. Marketing is actually very simple. Step 1, 2 and 3. The problem is most people miss steps 1 and 2 and step 3 is usually just a whole bunch of ad hoc ads. Thats great advice Brando M
Too many fail to plan their business at all not just the marketing aspect. Some do not understand what or who their target market really is and the crucial part is that marketing is all about solutions to peoples problems. Even if they don't know they have a problem! Keep up the good work. |
