Not long ago, I read an article in cnn.com that 72% of the working population wanted their own business. The reasons varied, but the bottom line was that many people were unhappy or dissatisfied with their jobs and would like the opportunity to change their lives by building a business of their own.
This is probably the reason why the home-based business industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the economy today. But, many work at home busiensses fail and it is not surprising why many fail. Yes, building a business is hard work, but so is having to deal with the stress and responsiblity of a job every day. Still, people most people do better at working at a job than they do working at their own business. One of the contributing factors to the failure of building a business is that many tend to have the same expectations at running a business as one would have at a job. Many people have trouble letting go of the employee mentality; meaning they expect to be rewarded for the hours that they put into their business. When they are not, many people tend to lose focus and in time, lose interest in their business. If you have a desire to start your own business, you need to realize that a job and a business are very different. At a job, their are immediate rewards and those rewards are often referred to as a paycheck. When you have a business, you may not get paid for a while. In fact, it may be months or even longer before you get paid. But, the benefit of owning a business, is that once your business begins to grow and as you become more successful, the rewards are far greater than anything you could get at a job; especially nowadays. But, you have to stick around long enough for those rewards to occur. Hard work and drive are the requirements of owning a business; but if you are doing something that you love, the hard work won't seem like hard work and you won't mind so much not getting paid for a while because you are having fun. In conclusion, if you want a successful business, go on get started, but realize that it won't be easy and there will be peaks and valleys during the business building process. But, while you are going through the process, enjoy it, have fun, and realize that the longer you stick with it, the more you will learn, the more likely your business skills will develop, and in time, you will be running a successful business from your home. Once you have attained success in your business, then you can begin to reap the rewards from your efforts and enjoy something a job could never give you, your freedom! |

It looks as if you both prefer a business of your own as opposed to a job. Good choice.
I wish both of you much success in whatever endeavor you pursue. |

Excellent post!
I have been on all three sides: I worked for someone else as an employee I owned and operated 8 retail stores I have 2 successful work at home businesses. Each ones has its good and bad. When I owned the 8 stores, sometimes I just wished I could sell them all and go back to work for someone else. When I worked for someone else I couldn't wait to get out on my own. Now I see that the best decision I ever made was to leave the rat race and work at home. Working at home is just like having a job, or owning retail stores - if you take your business serious and treat it like a business. The best part of working at home for me is NO EMPLOYEES! YEAH! And the freedom to work on MY time. Thanks for posting this thread.

Thank you Barbara. I see you understand my point. It has been a struggle for me too. I also own real estate. It never dawned on me the difficulty of having to deal with renters. I eventually got a property management company to take care of the triplex and one other rental property. The other properties are rent-to-own. They are less of a headache only because the renters are responsible for the upkeep of the property. I am still responsible for major repairs.
I am looking forward to getting my work from home business to the point where I can leave my job. I used to work from home for about 6 months and despite the long hours, I loved it. I am looking forward to doing it again. Angela, thank you for the welcome. I am sure I will have a great time. I already am. |

can imagine what it would be like if 72% of people had there own business.. where would we find employees.
i tend to work for other companies from time to time, not for the money, but the experience and working and socialising with others.. if you work for yourself and dont have full time employees then it can get a bit boring by yourself. its good to get out there from time to time. |

I guess that most people who post here prefer their own business, as otherwise they wouldn't find this forum in the first place. Same holds true for me.
