Build a Successful Business by Overcoming Your Fears
I am fairly new to having my own business. I started my first business almost 5 years ago. In the beginning, I was horrible. I am an extremely shy person,
You see, I was not only extremely shy, but I also have a speech impediment and I also have another disability that I was diagnosed with a while back. Despite the shyness and disabilities, I still wanted a business and had enough belief in myself that I could overcome the many obstacles I had facing me at the time. The problem was, how was I going to accomplish this?
Well, to put it quite simply, I just decided to get out there and do it; meaning, do the uncomfortable until it becomes comfortable. I started calling my customers and I started returning phone calls. I also had more people hang up on me than those who would sit and listen to my many mistakes during my script readings. It was awful. I also started putting out fliers, but I would sneak and put a flier on a car. I did not want people to see me putting the fliers out so I would hid them in a little small pouch I wore on my hip and then when no one was looking, I would put the flier on the car.
My struggles lasted for about a year or so, but during this time, I was getting better with my marketing skills and phone techniques and my confidence was growing. By my third year in the business, I had started making some money with my home business, about $2500 to $4000 per month. Not much, but it was far better than what I was making in the past.
Was I successful with the MLM? Unfortunately no. Things in the business started to occur that I had no control over and because my skill level was not at a place that I could recover, I lost many people in my group and thus decided to move on.
Now, fast forward to today. I have joined a business where I have started to blossom. I attribute my experiences in my first MLM, the trainings and the marketing and phone skills that I had developed to helping me in my rapid growth process with my current business opportunity. I have also started mentoring and leading training calls. I am also considered to be one of the leaders in the company I am involved with. My mentors are always pushing me to move forward and get out there and I do welcome the challenges.
I have also started investing in real estate. I currently own 6 properties with hopes of moving to commercial and even investing in tax lien certificates at some point.
I still have much work to do on improving my skills but I am making great strides in making things happen, but the point is that if someone like myself can overcome the many obstacles that I had set before me, then I know anybody can. You have to work on overcoming your fears. Everyone has fears and this is ok. But, don't let your fears hold you back. Often it takes just getting out there and making mistakes and even failing before you see any improvement.
Starting a business of your own is going to require a strong desire, drive because it is not going to be easy; especially in the beginning. Even five years later, I still see a tendency within me to run from things that I am afraid to do, but experience and trainings have taught me that in order to have a successful business, one needs to confront one's fears; not run from them. You also need to be open to the struggles of learning something new. This is one of the great things about owning a business; learning new things and overcoming challenges are part of the responsibility of an entrepreneur. Business owners will more than likely spend the remainder of their career learning, growing and solving problems. There will also be many mistakes and failures along the way. The road less traveled is not going to be easy, but once you overcome the obstacles you face, there will be many rewards awaiting you.
