With only $1000 you'd not be able to have a very diversified portfolio. The transaction costs would eat up your money. As for advisors, it may be hard to find advisors that are interested in helping manage a small size account. I recommend going to a mutual fund company, they have free advisors who can help you split your money across different funds. I'd recommend a good mutual fund company, but I don't know much about Ohio. Most mutual fund companies only charge a $30 one-time setup fee or have no-fee accounts which you can setup. Then if you buy/sell their set of funds there's no transaction costs. If you go to a broker the cheapest broker that I know is TradeFreedom and they charge $10/trade. Plus with discount brokerage you'd have to know which companies you want to invest in and do all the research yourself.
