A good way to build a list is to use splash pages. I am in the process of doing this at the moment. You basically have a little one page website offering something free, to get the their email address and first name. I actually found a free service which has all different templates and they even have the free gifts on their server for you to use.

I also build my list through my blog, forums, and many other methods
